How to promote your business online
How to choose promotion channels that suit your business and turn visibility into results you can measure. A simple guide for professionals.
Google, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, newsletters, paid ads. With so many options, it's easy to spread yourself across all of them and succeed at none. Good promotion doesn't start with "where is everyone?" It starts with "where do our clients look for us, and what can we realistically keep up over time?"
Three questions before you pick a channel
Where is your client when they need you? Someone who needs an emergency plumber is on Google. Someone looking for wedding design ideas is on Instagram. Someone choosing an accountant for their company asks colleagues on LinkedIn.
What can you produce consistently? A channel that needs three videos a week won't work if you have no time to film. One channel you keep alive beats three you abandoned.
How will you know it's working? Decide up front what success means: enquiries, calls, sign-ups. Likes on their own are not a result.
Common channels, and what each is good for
| Channel | Works especially well for | What it needs from you |
|---|---|---|
| Organic search on Google and AI engines | Services people actively search for | A site with a clear page for each service, and patience |
| Google Business Profile | Businesses with a defined service area | Up-to-date details, photos and reviews |
| Social media | Visual fields and building a reputation | Regular content and a personal presence |
| Paid ads | Fast results and testing an offer | A budget, and a landing page that converts |
| Referrals and partnerships | Services built on trust | Relationships, and service worth recommending |
Your website is the hub
Whatever channel you choose, it ends up in the same place: your website. A post, an ad or a search result brings a visitor, and the site has to finish the job. If it's slow, unclear or doesn't inspire trust, every dollar you put into promotion loses part of its value. That's why it pays to strengthen your site before you increase any budget.
Start small and measure
Pick one or two channels, give them a few months, and track how many enquiries each one brings. What works gets more time and budget. What doesn't, after a fair try, you can drop without guilt.
